What is Port Saplaya?
The area known as
the Little Venice of Valencia is a mainly residential area that belongs to the municipality of Alboraya (Valencia), located 2 kilometres from the municipality, in the northwest area. The census population has been around 2,000 inhabitants in recent years and is known for its colourful architecture, its peculiar urban planning and its beaches.
Origin of Port Saplaya
This enclave, which is today almost better known than Alboraya, the municipality to which it belongs, was born as a residential area in the 70s . Initially conceived as a second residence area, there are more and more continuous inhabitants in the area, although it continues to experience an increase in the summer months.
The project was born from the collaboration between entrepreneurs and landowners. These owners were, for the most part, tiger nut producers (to make the well-known
tiger nut horchata ) that they made use of on the land near the sea. At that time, as we have mentioned, the coast was full of fields, so the beaches were not at all accessible.
The project was inspired by the urban planning of the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera and was conceived as an inland port with access to the sea. A port surrounded by individual houses where each resident could have their boat docked at their doorstep. This vision was a revolution in urban planning at the time.
This small dock is integrated into docks surrounded by warm-coloured terraced houses. This unusual urban development is committed to pedestrian mobility and the tranquillity of the residents without losing sight of the Mediterranean. The complex is distributed in two squares, open on one side and porticoed on the other three. The promenades are separated in two by the opening of the port, which accesses the interior of the development. Motor vehicles can only travel on the street surrounding the complex from where the underground garage can be accessed.
